Tinted windows may have been created to give drivers greater privacy, but they offer many other important benefits. Here are a handful of them.
1. Shields Eyes
It might surprise you to learn that sun glare is responsible for thousands of car accidents each year in America. The reason? Even with the visor down, it is possible to be blinded by the rays of sun if they hit the windshield the right (or wrong) way. This can cause a driver to lose his/her vision for several seconds, which is more than enough time to collide with another vehicle. Because window tinting can reduce glare by up to 90 percent, it can minimize the risk of being blinded by the sun while driving.
2. Preserves Upholstery
The sun's ultraviolet rays (UV) have a knack for breaking down the chemical bonds in certain materials, which can cause them to fade or lose color. Because it is a relatively small space that is often exposed to direct sunlight, a car's interior can begin to fade in no time. For those who want to keep their upholstery looking vibrant and young, tinted windows are a must. Depending on the chosen grade, these layered films can block over 99 percent of UV radiation. So whether you have leather or fabric seats, they will be safe from the sun at all times.
3. Protects Glass
It may be tougher than it appears in the movies, but automotive glass can shatter with the right amount of force. Whether caused by an accident or road debris, flying shards of glass can easily injure drivers and their passengers. Window tinting is essentially a thick film that is applied to the outside of the glass. Should something then strike the glass, the surface may crack, but it should not shatter. The thick, surprisingly strong film should hold it together, protecting passengers inside from flying glass.
4. Cools Interior
In addition to blocking UV rays, tinted windows also prevent heat transfer. By keeping solar radiation out, the interior of your automobile will not become an oven on hot days. Not only will this make your ride more comfortable, but it will also save you money on cooling costs during the summer months. That fact alone makes tinting a wise investment for most drivers.
5. Reduces Cancer Risk
Direct sunlight is highly correlated with the two most common forms of skin cancer: basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma. Unfortunately for all of us, those cancers are on the rise in recent years. One simple way to reduce our exposure to harmful UV rays is to invest in window tinting. As mentioned earlier, some of the top automotive window films block out solar radiation almost completely (up to 99 percent) and keep us safe while we drive. They can also reduce the risk of premature facial aging due to sun exposure.
When we consider these benefits along with the added privacy window tinting provides, the investment becomes a no-brainer.
